Brake fluids

Brake fluids are fluids used to fill the hydraulic system of automobile brakes and clutches. In contrast to cooling fluids, they are intended for direct use and should never be diluted with water, because they would then lose their basic function – high boiling point. They can be used at a wide range of temperatures determined by the relevant outdoor air temperature and the maximum heating potential in the brake system through the brake disks/drums.

Important brake fluid parameters

  • High boiling point, DOT 3 type >230°C, DOT 4 type > 250°C, etc.
  • Low viscosity at low temperatures and high at higher operating temperatures.
  • Not corrosive for the rubber brake seals (especially EPDM and SBR).
  • Not corrosive for the materials in which they circulate.
  • Lowest possible hazard for health and the environment.

These parameters are further specified by the international standards of independent institutions, such as FMVSS 571.116 – DOT, ISO 4925, SAE J 1703 / 1704 and the standards of automobile manufacturers, such as VW TL 766 and VW 50114.

Good storage conditions are important parameters for good functioning of brake fluids Only good conditions ensure the lowest possible contamination by water, as brake fluids are hygroscopic, or mechanical impurities, as this can affect fluid functioning. Essential parameters include higher stock weight of the plastic packaging, tightness of its closing – lid, cleanness of barrels from rust, etc.

CLASSIC Oil s.r.o. is currently the largest Czech manufacturer of brake fluids, especially the DOT 4 LV type, with monthly production of about 1 tanker / 2 trucks (barrels, canisters) intended primarily for the demanding German market.
